We've fine-tuned the following process over more than three decades in journalism. Our approach has the client in mind from beginning to end—so the only surprises are pleasant ones.

EDITORIAL RESEARCH

The Pre-Interview

We start with your audience. Clearly defining and understanding your readers is essential to know how to best resonate with them. We employ an approach based on ancient storytelling techniques. This early investment of time bodes well for a rich payoff—a book that solidly connects you and your audience.

Creative Meeting

After assessing your goals laid out in the pre-interview, our team sets an editorial roadmap. We develop questions for each interview and brainstorm a vision for the book’s design, style and tone, as well as the direction the book’s format and organization will take.

PRODUCTION

Writing & Editing

To the seasoned journalist’s ear, writing begins even before all interviews are completed. A phrase, anecdote or quote will strike such a perfect chord it will begin to position itself—as a headline, a powerful transition, a catchy callout—and be stored away until ready to make its mark. Once completed, the interviews are transcribed, carefully pored over and mined for gold. Powerful beginnings that compel further reading are hewn. Punchy quotes, colorful reflections and stirring narratives are fashioned. It’s all in the service of your story--your bridge to your readers. The text is carefully edited and proofread with an eye toward advancing your goals. At this stage, your book’s format and organization have taken shape.

Interviews

Decades of professional journalism experience have helped us hone a relaxed, conversational interviewing style. We elicit responses with depth—not simple “yes” and “no” answers—that provide the fodder for a rich, engaging book. We jump in with poignant follow-up questions. Further, our interviewers identify captivating and relevant art, graphics and artifacts to illustrate your book. We also turn to historical materials to provide context.

The tone and style that best support your goals with your audience have fully taken shape. Our graphic designers storyboard a compelling layout—from a striking color scheme to the most fitting font—that is thematically cohesive. They place images and art within the text for maximum impact, and captions are written. A series of cover candidates are designed so your book is stunning inside and out.

Proof & Polish

It’s our storytelling but your story. We want you to be thrilled with your book, so you’ll receive a “playback” of the work for your review. Once you have approved the content and chosen a cover, we’ll send it through another round of copy editing and proofread it again—and again. Typos and errors are unwelcome in our universe. We are ready to deliver your book—an enduring work of depth and beauty.
